What to expect from BABOK® V3!

After much anticipation, IIBA® announced the launch of BABOK® V3 Series. The international body which celebrates the professional excellence in Business Analysis and has become the culminating point for crediting the same, which had announced the impending update of BABOK® last year, declared the launch of series on 11thof August, 2015. Apart from major changes in key Knowledge Areas and aligned tasks, the recent upgrade includes certain important changes in the newer version. These changes range from the introduction of BA Core Concept Model to the addition of the 16 techniques apart from the major alterations in the tasks specified. Since the understanding about the profession remains unaltered, the ideal candidate would not find the updates much challenging. Still they are significant and require a dose of knowledge to get in grasp with. Only one KA name remains intact in the BABOK® V3. Nine tasks remain same and there have been a lot of updates in terms of name and task alteration. With the launch of the series followed by a good number of webinars and discussions, let’s have a look as the probable changes which the candidates can expect in the new version of BABOK® v3 aimed for IIBA® CBAP® certification. BABOK® V3 has broadened the scope of Enterprise Analysis by including change strategies and various organizational transitions, and renaming it as Strategy Analysis.
  • Elicitation and Collaboration has replaced Elicitation KA in V3 with the addition of “Manage Stakeholder Collaboration” task.
  • The “Conduct Stakeholder Analysis” task in Planning and Monitoring has been changed into “Plan Stakeholder Engagement”.
  • The Requirements Management and Communication KA, has been renamed as Requirement Life Cycle Management with a special emphasis on Requirements which has been placed in RLCM.
  • Requirement Analysis is similar in BABOK® V3, apart from the addition of concept of “Design”.
  • Solution Analysis has taken over Solution Assessment and Validation in BABOK® V3.There have been three new tasks: Measure Solution Performance, Analyze Performance Measures and Access Enterprise Limitations which are included in the newer version. The focus has shifted more towards the work of evaluating solution performance.
A total of 25 % change has been reported in BABOK® V3 with eight additions and ten deletions from the older version. The current version BABOK® V3 contains 30 tasks in all. BABOK® V3 has been reported to be better than the previous BABOK® V2 with the necessary refinement in KAs which boils down to a better Business Analysis practice. As per the estimates of IIBA®, BABOK® has grown 50 % from the previous version and currently has 500 pages. It has become a richer and more complete set of information regarding the profession. The newer version is being considered to be more insightful and focused than its predecessor. Version V3 is extensively researched and restructured update which has significantly enlarged the scope. BABOK V3 following lines Business Analysis Core Concept Model (BACCM) Conceived in May 2011, by the Core team for BABOK®, the updated version is seen as the conscious effort by IIBA® and a necessary step in understanding the challenges of the profession. Columns: Microsoft project provides you the option of 40 columns whereas Primavera P6 comes installed with 200 columns, each specifying different set of information. Project Website: Primavera P6 provides an option to create a comprehensive project website containing all the details which can be defined. Microsoft Project lacks this website feature. Custom Fields: Both the software's allow you to create custom fields. MS project enables the users to define the formulas and even add additional values to these custom fields. In Primavera P6 Professional Fundamentals Course you can create a blank custom field, but you cannot set formulas to it, so users have to manually enter values in each field, for each column. The users can use Activity Codes in P6 to create a column that has values that can be picked from a list similar to the Lookup feature in Microsoft Project’s custom fields. However, Primavera P6 includes multiple project tracking, multiple project or WBS comparisons, costs and units calculations. External relationships: Microsoft Project uses a special feature called Links between Projects to achieve inter-project dependency modeling. Primavera P6 enables to open multiple projects for editing at a given point of time. This allows for relationships to be established between activities in different projects when inter-dependencies exist using identical techniques to assign the relationships. Discussions: Primavera P6 lets the users to have discussions among the team mates within the tool. PMBOK Where did the change in PMBOK®start? The recent Role Delineation Study (RDS) by PMI® provided a new updated description of the Project Management Professional role. The research, which included a survey of active Project Management Professional credential holders and the challenges they face in the real time, forms the basis of the necessary updates in the PMBOK®. Consequently, the newer version is loaded with several additions in each domain making it more relevant and up-to-date. RDS is usually conducted at an interval of 3-5 years which ensures that the exam is in line with the most updated requirements. Domain 1: Initiating the Project Let’s have a look at the major changes which will have a direct bearing on the examination for PMP®.Following is the list of the newly added content in all the domains (source: PMI® website) Three new tasks have been added:
Task 2 Identify key deliverables based on the business requirements in order to manage customer expectations and direct the achievement of project goals.
Task 7 Conduct benefit analysis with relevant stakeholders to validate project alignment with organizational strategy and expected business value.
Task 8 Inform stakeholders of the approved project charter to ensure common understanding of the key deliverables, milestones, and their roles and responsibilities.
Domain 2: Planning the Project One task has been added:
Task 13 Develop the stakeholder management plan by analyzing needs, interests, and potential impact in order to effectively manage stakeholders' expectations and engage them in project decisions.
Domain 3: Executing the Project Two tasks have been added:
Task 6 Manage the flow of information by following the communications plan in order to keep stakeholders engaged and informed.
Task 7 Maintain stakeholder relationships by following the stakeholder management plan in order to receive continued support and manage expectations.
Domain 4: Monitoring and controlling the Project Two tasks have been added.
Task 6 Capture, analyze, and manage lessons learned, using lessons learned management techniques in order to enable continuous improvement.
Task 7 Monitor procurement activities according to the procurement plan in order to verify compliance with project objectives.
Domain 5: Closing the project No new tasks have been added. The additions in current version evade the possibilities on inconsistency and other bottlenecks in the process and at the same time widen the scope of the overall process. Important Date: 11 January 2016: Last date till the candidates can take the examination aligned to PMBOK® 5 older version. After that only the new version of PMP® exam will be administered. This does not mean that the process is altered. The requirements remain the same for PMP® examination.  The reporting format and the process remains the same as previous.
